"Owasso" a northern suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma is an Osage Indian word, meaning "the end of the trail" or "turn around." At the turn of the century, it identified the area where the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line ended - in a field several miles northeast of Tulsa, which became Owasso. The depot for the railroad was the first Owasso building. Originally settled in 1881 in Indian Territory, the town incorporated in 1904 just prior to Oklahoma statehood and was chartered as a city in 1972. Owasso's population remained at a few hundred people until the end of World War II. Then the veterans came to the area for the developing aircraft industry, mainly the Tulsa Airport, located just south of Owasso. The aircraft and related industries brought families to Owasso from across the midwest from 1950-1970 raising the population into the thousands. Owasso has been experiencing rapid growth ... according to the 2020 Census, zip code 74055 population in 2020 was estimated at 38,240. Owasso is one of the fastest growing cities in Oklahoma. Owasso is located approximately 5-7 miles north of Tulsa off of Highway 169, and east of Highway 75 North. Owasso has become home to an estimated 34,000 residents and serves a market area comprised of about 700,000 Oklahomans. Owasso residents get the convenience and amenities of a metropolitan area without living there. Owasso Annual Averages: 9 inches of snow as compared to the average US city getting 25 inches/year, and 39 inches of rainfall as compared to 37 with other cities.

The City Manager is responsible for day to day operations of the city and our City Departments. He works closely with the Owasso Public Works Authority, Owasso Economic Development Authority, and the Golf Authority. Sales Tax is the primary source of income for the city. This helps to pay salaries, infrastructure, etc. Owasso has no income from ad valorem taxes, and has in the past left this source of income for the schools, which are rated very high in excellence in education.
