Oologah Lake is a key unit in the main control plan for flood control and

(From Claremore, follow Hwy 88 North 8 miles.) - Map (mapquest online) Facilities: Marina servies, boat ramps, docks, 142 campsites with electricity, 11 Parks, picnicking and group picnic shelter Hawthorn Bluff and Spencer Creek appear to offer the most facilities at the moment, from what I can tell... That's hearsay, so you should check it out for yourself. I haven't been everywhere... yet! :) Map (PDF file) Featuring: Aproximately 29,500 surface acres of water 209 miles of shoreline 18 mile equestrian and hiking trails including Will Rogers Centennial Trail and Skull Hollow Nature Trail Great Fishing for catfish, sand bass, large mouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and walleye Skiing, Canoeing, Boating and Sailing Hunting during season; Regulations | Map (Adobe PDF file) Designated Swimming Beaches 11 Parks Filled with a rich history and surrounded by horse country, Oologah Lake offers what I consider to be the best of the natural pleasures of life. On the east side of the lake, the Will Rogers Country Centennial Trail winds around the shore from the Spillway to Blue Creek Park totalling 18 miles. This journey can be enjoyed by hiking or horse back riding. The name Oologah, pronounced oo'-la-gawh, is a Cherokee word meaning "dark cloud." I can't help but think there was a tornado brewing the day Oologah was named. America's most famous Cherokee Cowboy, Will Rogers was born at, The Dog Iron Ranch, now inundated by Oologah Lake. His home was relocated to a hill overlooking the lake just northeast of the town of Oologah. The ranch predates the town, which grew up when the railroad came through around 1890. I have some more Oologah History if you're interested. Oologah Lake is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
